Located in Portland, Oregon, The Photographers' Education Group (PEG) is a non-profit organization with the mission of providing education in fine art photography for photographers, collectors and educators. A major focus of PEG is to build an interest in young photographers and to support them with educational opportunities, equipment/supplies, contests and exhibitions of their photographic work. PEG accomplishes its goals by:

Hosting workshops
Sponsoring lectures featuring noted photographers and industry leaders
Sponsoring and organizing photography contests for young photographers
Sharing the work of mature photographers with young photographers
Studying and discussing the work of photographers in the context of the history of photography
Organizing gallery and art museum tours
Providing educational photography outings

PEG is also heavily involved with other non-profit organizations to provide photographic services and support that helps these organizations achieve their worthwhile goals. Most recently these organizations have included a Native American group to document the history of the Grand Ronde tribe and the Shriner's Hospital to provide photography for their Grand Re-Opening.

"Photographing the Coast Workshop" by John Wimberely

This exciting workshop provides a unique opportunity to photograph the stunning Oregon coast with world-renowned photographer John Wimberley, The Portland Metro Photographic News recently called “Oregon’s Photo Laureate”. Anyone with a camera is welcome, regardless of experience level, age, format, or whether using film or digital.

Class sessions and supportive, productive portfolio reviews will be held at the Newport Arts Center. Field trips to special, nearby locations to photograph will provide an opportunity for John to provide both group and one-on-one instructions.

The emphasis will be on the inner awareness and exploration of each photographers’ personal relationship with potential subject matter. We will learn effective and proven methods to establish “right-relationship” with whatever we are drawn to photograph, allowing our intuition, emotions, feelings, and the essence of our individuality to fully enrich our photographs.

This is a rare chance to spend a fun, fascinating weekend photographing one of America’s most beautiful places with “One of America’s finest living landscape photographers.”

Location: Washington State University, Vancouver, WA

Tuition: $130 (limited to 15 students)

During the past decade, revolutionary changes have taken place in book publishing. It is now possible to download book design software and creating a very high quality book, then have it printed in any quantity. No longer is a large investment required for a press run. This opens vast possibilities for anyone to design and publish their own work at a very low cost.

During this one-day, John Wimberley, workshop, you will learn how to download and install BookSmart (the self publishing, book design software from Blurb. All aspects of using the software will be covered, from initial concept through layout and page design to uploading the finished book for printed copies.

You will also learn how to use Photoshop Elements to design pages and then load them into BookSmart. By the end of the day, each student will have a thorough grounding in the basic skills needed to design and self-publish books on any topic.

The University of Washington Vancouver is a beautiful campus set overlooking open fields and vistas of Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Jefferson and Mt. Hood. The computer room is for Mac users only, but the programs and lectures will be beneficial to any computer platform. If you wish to bring your own laptop, arrangements can be made. John Wimberley has been a photographic artist for 44 years, and since 1981 has photographed full-time. Now, John has distilled all of his experience into 10 concise lessons that begin by laying a solid technical foundation, then progresses to methods that facilitate your own unique, individual creativity.

Claudia Howell presents Select the Best: No Nonsense Photo Editing.

You're back from your photo shoot with hundreds of images. Now what?

This class will help you edit images down to a manageable number. You'll learn to look at your photos with a critical eye for composition, the story they tell, and their final use. You'll get tips on how to shoot more selectively resulting in fewer images to edit.

There will be plenty of time for questions and discussion. Bring a camera to shoot on campus. We'll have hands-on editing exercises in the afternoon.

"Editing your images is the next most important step after making them. I want to help you get to the essence of what you saw in the viewfinder. The difference between an average photographer and a good photographer is that a good one doesn't show the bad stuff. Take charge of your outtakes. Select the best and save disk space."

About Photographer/Instructor John Wimberley

John Wimberley was born in Bermuda in 1945. He currently lives in southern Oregon. He began his photographic journey in 1966 while serving in the U.S. Navy.

In reviewing his first one-man show in 1973, Artweek wrote, "The first thin that one is made aware of is that the photographer, John Wimberley, is a craftsmand of the highest order. His prints are not merely technically correct, but wonderfully alive." John became a sought-after expert in black & white film development.

In 1983, John had the first of two, two-man exhibitions with Ansel Adams. Now, with more than 44 years in photography, John's critcally acclaimed work has been honored with more than 70 major exhibitions, and is represented in more than 500 public and private collections. As the Herald of Monterey recently wrote, "Wimberley's undisputed technical mastery is but the springboard for visual poetry of spiritual realms. What remains unnoticed by most, as seen through Wimberley's eyes, becomes a powerful mysterious invitation."

About Photographer/Instructor Claudia Howell

Photographer Claudia Howell borrowed a camera for a college trip to Europe and has been hooked on photography every since. She earned her degree in photojournalism and began her photography career at the former Oregon Journal in Portland, OR.

"I was just amazed. They actually paid me to do what I love to do. What a deal."

Howell has photographed all aspects of news, sports and features including some of the region's major stories, such as the Mt. St. Helens eruption, Eastern Oregon's Rajneeshee cult invasion and edited most of the civil war games between Oregon and OSU.

In the late 80s, she moved to The Oregonian, editing and shooting news, sports and feature photographs for 25 years.

"As a news picture editor, I learned to select the best work as quickly as possible. I also learned that most of us overshoot. There's a saying, 'film is cheap'. Well, digits are virtually free and that leads to even more overshooting."

Claudia is also an art photogapher and has ehibited extensively in the Portland metro area including: Newspace Center for Photography, White Sturgeon Art Gallery and Camerawork Gallery. Her subject matter ranges from digital color abstracts to black & white Holga photographs of horses.

"I love photography. It doesn't much matter what I shoot, it's the act of capturing what I see that gives me a buzz. The next biggest treat is to see how I did."

She is eager to share her experiences and expertise to help make photography and even more fun adventure for everyone.
